The Very Strange Story of the Startup That Says It Made $10m Before Launching

The Very Strange Story of the Startup That Says It Made $10m Before Launching

Written by Marshall Kirkpatrick / November 5, 2009 1:35 PM / 21 Comments

leapfishlogo.jpgBen Behrouzi came from the shadowy Lead Generation business, but some people in that field said he played too dirty. Now he's got a real-time search engine that just came out of beta today, called Leapfish, and he says the company will already report $10 million in revenue this year despite having barely launched to the public.

This is a strange story, but no one said the path to the future wouldn't itself be strange. So consider suspending your disbelief so you can see what Leapfish has to offer.

One hell of a welcome video - makes you feel like you are in the next Michael Bay action epic but it put a smile on my face I guess?

How did I miss this one?! Fire.fm Firefox Extension

Ok if anything I think I tend to overload firefox sometimes with extensions... well at least enough that I need to do a regular clean up every now and again. Having said that I have never bothered to install Fire.fm until this afternoon and wow... this extension is brilliant. If you use last.fm (and if you don't, start!) download Fire.fm today.

Porsche Panamera TV Commercial

This is a great new ad for the Panamera... not everyone's cup of tea for a 4 door Porsche but I like it! And yes it kind of does look like a squashed Cayenne

Twitter Suggested Users Lists - Kill it

The SUL is controversial and I understand why," Williams said at the recent Web 2.0 Summit. "I definitely want to kill it or evolve it. Once we get lists rolled out. We can make things more Twitter-y and democratic.

Twitter CEO Evan Williams talking about the sometimes controversial suggested users lists feature on the website.

VirtualBox - Painless Virtualization

This is just a quick write up for anyone who finds themselves in a similar position to me over the weekend. After finding a recent project for a client had run into a few hiccups thanks to IE6 I found myself in a position where I needed to recreate the problem on my MacBook. The only problem (apart from the obvious - no Explorer on Mac!) is that I have never bothered trying out Parallels.

For those scratching their heads right now, virtualization refers to applications which allow you to run a separate operating system to your native installation in a virtual environment on the one host.

It was at this point that I recalled reading about VirtualBox (and sorry to the blogger who mentioned this piece of software as I cannot remember where I read this some time ago). VirtualBox is an open-source "full virtulaizer for x86 hardware".

I have to say that seeing I had never used such software before, the installation and set up was completely painless and required very little reading of the website documentation. Within no time (well the time it takes to setup Windows aside) I had the site up and running in Explorer 6. If you are using a Mac and need to test on Explorer I highly recommend checking out VirtualBox!
